Dangerous Minds

  • Michelle Pfeiffer is a former Marine turned high school teacher in this gripping and uplifting true-life story. The feisty instructor defies all the rules to teach the kids to believe in themselves despite the everyday challenges of growing up in the inner city. System Requirements: Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, George Dzundza, Courtney B. Vance, Robin Bartlett, Beatrice Winde, John Neville Dir
Top Hollywood star Michelle Pfeiffer (I AM SAM, WHAT LIES BENEATH) is the driving force behind this gripping and uplifting smash hit! Based on an incredible true-life story -- Pfeiffer is former U.S. Marine LouAnne Johnson, a first-time high school teacher assigned to a class of tough but smart inner city students. When conventional methods fail to reach them, the feisty Ms. Johnson tries the unconventional -- defying the rules and creating her own curriculum! In the process, she instills a new self-con! fidence in her students -- motivating them toward their greatest potential. Critically acclaimed and powered by a riveting star performance, DANGEROUS MINDS is hard-hitting, crowd-pleasing entertainment you won't soon forget! This "To Ma'am with Love" is much more an escapist popcorn movie than the inner-city document its marketing suggested. Michelle Pfeiffer plays real-life former Marine Louanne Johnson, a high school English teacher who meets resistance from kids and administration alike at a tough urban school in Northern California. Pfeiffer is good, and her character's overall development even survives various post-production story cuts. (A romance with Andy Garcia's character was completely eliminated before release; Garcia is nowhere in sight.) The actors who play Johnson's students are also fine, and the whole film becomes the latest in a long tradition of sentimental movies about teachers who change the lives of kids. --Tom Keogh

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Courtney Peldon (born April 13, 1981) is an American television and film actress. Peldon was born in New York City, New York to Jeffrey "Jeff" Peldon (attorney) and Wendy Peldon (college professor). Her younger sister Ashley Peldon is also an actress. Both she and Ashley became involved in the entertainment industry as child actors. Peldon is perhaps best known for her three seasons as Jonathan Taylor Thomas's on-screen girlfriend Lauren on Home Improvement, and for her ! three seasons on Boston Public. She has appeared in many roles on various television shows such as That '70s Show, Entourage, The Pretender, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Renegade and Nash Bridges to name a few.Still guilt-ridden over the accident that took his family's lives, Eric Norris discovers that his body is host to a parasite from another world. Except, it is more than a parasite: it carries his DNA. Is this his new son or â€" as the government believes â€" a threat to mankind? The notion of human-alien miscegenation, and the prospect of what kind of offspring would come from such an unholy union, is nothing new in movieland, but InAlienable gives it a new spin by handling it as a legal drama, pitting government vs. individual in a fight to determine just who said offspring would belong to. Director Robert Dyke's film is loaded with actors who've put in time on sci-fi shows, from Star Trek (several incarnations, including the original), Stargate, Alien Nation, Babylon 5, and Battlestar ! Galactic a. The latter's Richard Hatch stars as Dr. Eric Norris, a scientist who's continuing with his research despite being guilt-ridden over the death of his wife and son in a car crash. When a friend brings him a meteorlike object that he found in the desert and asks Norris to check it out, the doc doesn't give it much thought--until he wakes up pregnant, having been invaded by the alien life form that had been on board the meteor. The humanoid thing that emerges from his abdomen is dismissed as a parasite, but it carries enough of Norris's DNA for him to take a shine to it; indeed, he names it "Benjamin" and insists on referring to it as his son, scary tentacles and all. That's when the sinister guys in dark suits show up, insisting that Benjamin should be handed over to the feds for the good of all, followed by lawyers, courtroom scenes, and so on. Sure, the idea is preposterous, but it could have been a fun ride were it not for the fact that InAlienable is, quite si! mply, very poorly done, with cheesy special effects and laughable action sequences. As for the cast, Hatch is fine, but much of the rest of the acting is dreadful, especially Courtney Peldon as Norris's love interest and Walter Koenig, Star Trek's Mr. Chekov himself, as his vengeful boss; then again, Brando and Olivier would have had a tough time with this script (also Koenig's work). Cool idea, though. --Sam Graham

Four months after pregnant Sara loses her husband in a horrific auto accident, she is visited on Christmas Eve by a mysterious madwoman. Alone and desperate to save her unborn child, Sara fights to stay alive as each of her potential rescuers die at the womans sadistic hands.Hailed by several critics as the first great French horror film this millennium, Inside opens on a gory note and stays true to the bloodfest throughout. But rather than using splatter-gore for comedic effect, as did young directing team Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's predecessor,! Hershell Gordon-Lewis, this duo timed their gore to build tragic suspense, scene after disgusting scene. The strength of Inside's plot is its simplicity, though the film is slow at first. Pregnant photojournalist, Sarah Scaragato (Alysson Paradis), has just lost her husband in a fatal car accident and is in recovery when her baby is due on Christmas Eve, in fact. Morose, she rejects friend and family visits, opting to stay home. A bewitched predator, played by Beatrice Dalle, senses Sarah's vulnerability and seizes upon it like a spider capturing prey in its web. The tale, woven around maternal psychosis, reveals Dalle's haunting preoccupation with stealing Scaragato's unborn baby. Each character who enters Sarah's house, the "war zone" as one doomed policeman puts it, encounters the wrath of two women fighting with mirror shards, knitting needles, scissors, hurled kitchen appliances, and even a homemade bayonette. Like the best horror thrillers about motherhood---Rosemary's Baby
, Don't Look Now, Alien---Inside seizes ample symbolic opportunities to exhibit the primal obsession women have with babies. Even better, Inside invites feminist critique as do other female-centric horror films such as Ginger Snaps, whose plots not only include strong, vengeful female victims, but also sympathetic, criminal femme fatales. An entertaining "Making of Inside" featurette follows, revealing makeup and special effects techniques. Inside is for a specific audience; as scenes get redder and wetter, the squeamish may find it sickening---beware and enjoy. â€"Trinie DaltonSex and sunlight are on ample display in Betty Blue, director Jean-Jacques Beineix's passionate look at mad love. Even in a land ravaged by hatred, fear and intolerance, the seeds of love can still find nourishment to take root and blossom. It is 1947, and amidst the chaos and bloodshed unleashed when India and Pakistan are split into separate states, Sikh and former soldier Gian (Jimi Mistry) risks everything to save Naseem (Kristin Kreuk) a young Muslim woman, from a violent mob. Soon, love builds a bridge between their two worlds, healing the wounds in both their hearts. But how long can their joy last when religious zealots try to tear them apart forever? With its rich tapestry of stories and characters based on real people and events, Partition is a moving and timeless tale of innocent people struggling to ! find happiness in treacherous times.STREET FIGHTER:LEGEND OF CHUN LI - DVD MovieThe origin story of the characters from Capcom’s popular Street Fighter video game is detailed in The Legend of Chun-Li, a live-action martial arts thriller from Doom helmer Andrzej Bartkowiak. Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk gives a spirited turn in the title role, a concert pianist turned global crime fighter who cracks her share of heads while in pursuit of the mobsters who have kidnapped her father. Neal McDonough and Michael Clarke Duncan glower effectively as Bison, the nefarious mastermind behind the abduction, and his henchman, Balrog, respectively. The film’s offbeat cast, which includes Chris Klein and Moon Bloodgood as detectives, Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo as the claw-wielding Vega, and Hong Kong stars Pei-pei Cheng, Josie Ho and Edmund Chen in supporting roles, is the most inspired element of the film, which relies too often on well-worn action! and kung fu movie clichés to fill out moments between fight ! sequence s; the film’s target audience--fans of the game--may find this less engaging than younger, less discerning moviegoers with a yen for any flavor of punch-up. --Paul Gaita

GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS - DVD Mov! ie A film adaptation of Dito Montiel's memoir of the same name, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is a compelling, thoughtful movie based on Montiel's childhood growing up in 1980s Queens. A writer and director who understands his limitations, Montiel wisely left the acting to the pros. Shia LaBeouf (Holes) plays him during his adolescence, while Robert Downey Jr. (Good Night, and Good Luck, Wonder Boys) portrays the grown-up Dito. Never mind that there is absolutely no physical resemblance between the two actors; LaBeouf and Downey are so convincing in their roles it doesn't matter. Switching effortlessly from present day (where Dito is a successful author) to the past (where he is a tough little kid trying to figure out if there is life beyond New York), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints tackles Dito's complicated relationship with his parents (Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest), as well as the friends he left behind. Eric Roberts is m! agnificent in a small role as one of Dito's tough, childhood b! uddies. His powerful performance makes viewers remember there was a time when Roberts was better known for his acting skills than for being Julia's big brother. Montiel--a first-time filmmaker--won the Director's Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival for his autobiographical movie. Raw, gritty, and honest, Saints) makes a strong impact and leaves the viewer curious as to how the rest of Montiel's life will work out. --Jae-Ha KimA photojournalist is caught between success and ethics when a videotape he made for himself of the activities of an activist group at the Republican National Convention accidentally gets into the hands of the network where he works.
